Quick Tips for Controlling Asthma This Spring

Spring brings a sharp rise in pollen, one of the major triggers for asthma, a chronic lung disease that affects children and adults by causing wheezing, chest tightness, and breathing difficulties.

Asthma can’t be cured, but it can be controlled. By meeting with a doctor, making an asthma action plan, and taking the right medication, especially asthma controller medications, people with asthma can still enjoy the season and reduce the risk of a serious asthma attack.

Here are some ways to avoid pollen and other springtime asthma triggers:

  • Go outside in the evening when pollen counts are lower.
  • Take a shower and change clothes after being outdoors. Pollen stays on a person after being outside.
  • Don’t hang laundry outside to dry, where pollen can collect. Use a clothes dryer or indoor rack instead.
  • Be aware of high pollen counts, and stay indoors if a pollution advisory is issued.
